The Martyr’s Pilgrimage in Rwanda and Uganda is a profound journey that commemorates the lives and sacrifices of early Christian martyrs who stood firm in their faith despite persecution. Each year, thousands of pilgrims from across Africa and beyond gather to pay homage to these historical figures, particularly the Uganda Martyrs, a group of 45 Christians who were executed between 1885 and 1887 by King Mwanga II of Buganda for refusing to renounce their beliefs.
The pilgrimage often begins in Uganda, where the martyrs are celebrated at the Basilica of the Uganda Martyrs in Namugongo, a sacred site and focal point of worship. The experience is deeply spiritual, marked by prayers, singing, and moments of reflection. In Rwanda, pilgrims also visit revered sites tied to the history of Christianity in East Africa, connecting the journey to the broader narrative of faith, resilience, and unity in the region. The Martyr’s Pilgrimage not only honors the memory of the martyrs but also strengthens the spiritual resolve of those who undertake it, fostering a sense of shared heritage and devotion among participants.
Pilgrimage Program
Arrival in Kigali: Land in Kigali at night, where you can relax with a warm cup of coffee or tea.
Early Departure to Kibeho: Begin the journey to Kibeho at 4:00 AM (approx. 4-hour drive).
Day in Kibeho: Upon arrival, spend the rest of the day visiting the Divine Mercy Centre, with moments for reflection and prayer.

Full Day in Kibeho: Spend a contemplative day with a special meeting with Sister Nathalie. Visit the Perpetual Adoration Chapel and the Genocide Memorial to honor Rwanda’s history and pay respects.

Morning in Kibeho: Attend morning Mass for spiritual enrichment and closure on your visit to Kibeho.
Afternoon Transfer to Kigali: Return to Kigali, where you’ll enjoy dinner before preparing for your night flight to Entebbe, Uganda.

Uganda Martyrs Trail: Spend a full day exploring the Uganda Martyrs Trail in Kampala, visiting significant sites dedicated to the lives and sacrifices of the Uganda Martyrs.

Continuation of Martyrs Trail: Journey outside Kampala to continue the Martyrs Trail, visiting additional cultural and historical sites of the Buganda Kingdom. If possible, visit the home of the chief executioner of the Uganda Martyrs, where his descendants still reside.

Uganda Martyrs Day Celebrations: Participate in the grand Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations at the Namugongo Shrine. Afterward, unwind with a relaxing sunset cruise on Lake Victoria.

Return to Namugongo: Attend Mass and enjoy a tour of the Uganda Martyrs Museum with fewer crowds, allowing for a peaceful, reflective experience.
Farewell Dinner: End the pilgrimage with a farewell dinner, then transfer to the airport for your evening departure.
